G. Verdi
Verdi’s work of old age and at the same time the last opera from his pen belongs to the genre of commedia lirica. The premiere of “Falstaff” took place to great acclaim at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1893 and ushered in a renaissance of comic opera at the turn of the century. Falstaff influenced, among others, the cheerful stage works of Richard Strauss and also the brilliant “Gianni Schicchi” by Giacomo Puccini.
The character of Falstaff describes an old man, very obese and fond of drinking, poltrous, who sets out with shrewdness and quick-wittedness to replenish his dwindling financial reserves. This burlesque and entertaining story tells how he succeeds, what intrigues are forged and who ends up happy with whom.
Arrigo Boito wrote a witty libretto based on William Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” (including scenes from “Henry IV”), which sparkles with wit and wordplay. Verdi composed the opera at the age of almost 80, and perhaps the fact that as a celebrated composer of the century he no longer had anything to prove to anyone may have contributed to the musical realization being so pointed, lively and authentic.

Bryn Terfel
Making his debut on the greatest opera stages of our time already during the early years of his successful career, which now spans over 25 years, the charismatic Welshman Sir Bryn Terfel has won over audiences and critics alike time and time again. Since then, Terfel has shone in his vocal range of bass-baritone in the title roles of ´Falstaff´, ´Le nozze di Figaro´, ´Don Giovanni´, ´Gianni Schicchi´ or ´Der fliegende Hollaender´, among others, as well as in the roles of Jochanaan (R. Strauss, ´Salome´), Baron Scarpia (G. Puccini, ´Tosca´) and Wotan (R. Wagner, ´Die Walkuere´). Terfel’s professional career has included appearances at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Bavarian State Opera, the Vienna State Opera and the Lucerne Festival, to name just a few of the frequently recurring stops.
The opera singer is under contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has released several highly popular recordings. In addition to classical opera aria repertoire, these include folkloristic songs from his homeland as well as Christmas carols. Sir Bryn Terfel has received many international awards and was knighted in 2017 for his services to music.
